I’ve been writing for over a year on this blog, and have slowly but steadily had increased traffic. Everything was going great in early June. Then came June 26, 2009…

I had a massive amount of traffic on that day thanks to StumbleUpon with many people reading my Why Is Windows 7 Amazing post. At first I was ecstatic. Until I saw the official number the next day when I check my Analytics – 666.

I knew after that moment, my blog was cursed. And I have the statistics to prove it. Before the incident I was receiving 30 to 40 hits a day. After, an almost instant drop to 10-20. That’s a 50% drop! And months later I’m still receiving the same amount.

Moral of the story – Don’t Do Drugs. Oh, and watch out for the number 666.

I tried a few times to remove it, but could never remove the background. Well this morning, I finally found out what needed removing in the stlye.css file in the Appearance>Editor in the Blog Admin Panel.

You’ll need to find this code, and remove it. Then update the file and your pictures should no longer have a background! Let me know how it goes in the comments below.

Notice: This post is directed towards those who have transferred a domain to GoDaddy that has previously been setup with Google Apps at another host. If you have any questions please post in the comments.

I recently transferred my domain and hosting from Dreamhost to GoDaddy. I would first like to thank Jeremy for helping me by pointing me in the right direction when I had no idea what to do.

My problem was that the forwarding mail.nathat.com was no longer redirecting me to google.com/a/nathat.com/#inbox. This is not a huge problem, but is annoying, because mail.nathat.com is easier to remember. The main problem was that the email addresses I had with Google Apps (nathat[at]google.com, ect…) no longer had the ability to send or receive after transferring the domain to GoDaddy. When I tried sending an email to my @nathat.com addresses, it would fail. When I tried sending a domain from my @nathat.com addresses, nothing would happen.

After reading around on the internets and talking to Jeremy I knew that I would somehow need to change my CNAME and MX settings with the domain.

To do this, you need to log into your GoDaddy account, and go to the “Domain Manager” – It is on the left sidebar. Once the page loads, find your domain and click on it. You should now see a page like this:

You will now need to click on “Total DNS Control and MX Records” located on the right side of the image I uploaded, or in the middle of the page, if you are looking at your personal GoDaddy Domain Manager. After you have click on that link, you will see a lot of information. You must now locate the “CNAMES” and check to make sure none of the “Host” values are either mail, docs, start, or calendar. If any of them are, then you must select them by clicking on the little peice of paper and pencil to the right of the values and change the “Points to Host Name” value to “ghs.google.com” (without quotes) If none of those host values are already there, then skip the next mini paragraph

For example: When I first looked at my “CNAMES” I already have a “mail” host pointing towards some sercureserver.com address. I left the host as “mail” and just changed the “Points to Host Name” value to “ghs.google.com”

You must make sure you have the host values “mail, docs, start, and calendar” CNAMES all created and pointing at “ghs.google.com” After this has been done, now you need to create new MX (Mail Exchange) Records. We’re still on the same page we added the new CNAMES, we’ve just scrolled down a bit. You should now see a button labeled “Add New MX Record” – click this and create the following values.

Host Name: @
Enter Goes To Address: aspmx.l.google.com
Priority: 10

Host Name: @
Enter Goes To Address: alt1.aspmx.l.google.com
Priority: 20

Host Name: @
Enter Goes To Address: alt2.aspmx.l.google.com
Priority: 30

Host Name: @
Enter Goes To Address: aspmx2.googlemail.com
Priority: 40

Host Name: @
Enter Goes To Address: aspmx3.googlemail.com
Priority: 50

After you are done enterting these records, give the DNS a bit to get everything sorted out. In my case, this only took about 30 minutes, but it could take up to 48 hours. I can now login and send/receive emails once again! Let us know in the comments if this helped you get Google Apps setup!

For the past few months I have been using the ColdStone Theme from ElegantThemes.com. It looked alright at the time, and it surved it purpose quite well. But it had definitely a few weaknesses. It’s compatibility with plugins and widgets was terrible. It wasn’t even compatible with itself! I was constantly running into appearance errors when uploading videos or pictures. Well I’ve finally decided to move on to bigger and better thinks. I’m not so sure about the bigger part, but it’s sure better! I can actually customize the theme without destroying it from the inside out. Not only that, but I don’t feel like I’m staring into a dark and evil web page with a stone background, with a dark and rustic feel to it.

My technique for choosing a new theme worked out extremely well in my opinion. I started by browsing the Wordpress Free Theme Directory and downloading any theme that had any potential. I did this because we all know how well the “preview” works without a few tweaks on your end to mix with your site. Let alone adding your personal widgets and logo. Well I downloaded around 20 themes and threw them all up on my server and went to Admin>Appearance>Themes and started previewing my new themes. I tested out a few but finally decided to go with Js O3 Lite. I was tempted to use the Black Hat Theme, but only for the significance of the name. But unfortunately the overall appeal (or lack thereof) turned me away. I’m not sure how long I will keep it, but I’m sure digging it right now!

It’s got amazing AJAX code, an awesome RSS/Twitter button, and a very basic look to it. Well it actually came with a very lame RSS/Twitter Button:

I’m not going to lie, that bird is fat and ugly. So I decided to go about making my own and grabbed a couple logo’s (looking for logo’s?) and put my own little button together.

Since nothing is perfect, I have had a few little customization’s I’ve had to make that I couldn’t live without on this theme. One of them was getting rid of the homepage character limit per post. It’s an extremely easy fix. You will just need to navigate to the Admin>Appearance>Editor>Main Index Page. Once there, do a search for “the_content_rss” and earase “_rss”. Then proceed and get rid of the “More ;raquo” or whatever it says right below it. Don’t change anything else. You should now be golden! If you have any problems feel free to let me know in the comments.
